• April 9: Dr. Alexander Fleming and his Greek assistant Amalia Katsouri announce their plans to wed.

May

• May 7: The Central Intelligence Agency of Greece (KYP) is established.

June

• June 18: Greek forces repel Chinese attacks on Hill 440 during the Korean War.

July

• July 24: The trial of Nikos Ploumpidis - alleged to be head of illegal KKE operations in Greece - commences.

August

• August 3: Nikos Ploumbidis is sentenced to death for espionage.
• August 12: A major earthquake (7.2 on the Richter scale) destroys much of Kefallonia and the surrounding areas.

October

• October 21: Alexandra Ladikou is voted Miss World first runner-up.

November

• November 24: Spiros Markezinis, unofficially the Finance MInister of the Alexandros Papagos government, announces that he will proceed with "cutting off three zeroes from the currency bills." The value of the drachma against the dollar becomes 1 to 30 and not 1 to 30,000 as it had been.

December

• December 22: Prime Minister Alexandros Papagos brings up the Cyprus matter, for the first time, in a conversation with Anthony Eden. He is rebuffed by the British PM with the words "There is no Cyprus matter".
• December 29: Greece replaces the oka with the kilogram as the standard measure of weight.
