• January 1: The first telegraph line in Greece, connecting Athens and Piraeus, goes into operation.

May

• May 10: Students clash with the police in Athens. The clashes will go down in history as "Skiadika" (skiadia events) from the "skiadia" hats worn by the students.

• August 2: King Otto lays the cornerstone of the building of the Academy of Athens.
