January

  • January 1: Greece assumes the Presidency of the European Union.
  • January 24: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November assassinate Michalis Vranopoulos, former governor of the National Bank.
  • January 24: Gymnast Ioannis Melissanidis wins the PSAT award. The young champion receives accolades when he dedicates the gold medal he earned at the European Juniors to the memory of his friend, Turkish gymnast Murat Kanbas, who died in a car accident before the games. For this gesture he was awarded the Ipekci prize.

  • March 16: PAOK defeat Stefanel 100-91 in Milan to win the Korac Cup.
  • March 28: EU representative Van der Brook asks Greek PM, Andreas Papandreou, to lift all the measures his government has taken against FYROM.

April

  • April 12: Greece and Albania expel each others diplomats over an attack at an army base in Argyrokastro that Albania claimed was the work of Greek agents.

June

  • June 6: Kostas Koukodimos breaks the Greek record for the long jump with a jump of 8.36m.
  • June 18: Ethnikos win their 35th Waterpolo title after beating Olympiakos 12-10. Ethnikos dominated the waterpolo championships for many years in the past (1953-1968 and 1972-1985)
  • June 21: The Greek National Football Team play their first game ever in a World Cup tournament (1994 FIFA World Cup in USA). They suffer a loss against Argentina (4-0) -- Diego Maradona scores one goal and Gabriel Batistuta a hat-trick.

  • September 7: An Albanian court hands down jail sentences to five members of the Northern Epirus "Omonia Party" for "treason and collaboration with an outside power".

  • February 20: Triantafyllos Siaperas, former chess champion. In 1967 he wrote one of the first books about chess in Greece.
