  • February 5: Female readers of "Harlequin" romance novels in 14 countries name Greeks as the sexiest men in the world.
  • February 19: The government of FYROM asks the Greek government for permission to open a consulate in Athens.

March

April

  • April 1: A defendant is shot and wounded and his lawyer is killed, during a trial for negligent homicide. The culprit - who kills himself afterwards - is the father of the man whom the defendant killed in a traffic accident.
  • April 3: Panathinaikos stun Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam in the first leg of the Champions' League semi-finals.

  • June 4: Bavarian Greeks petition their local government to convince the German government not to recognise FYROM as "Macedonia".
  • June 4: FYROM reject Slobodan Milosevic's initiative to settle their dispute with Greece by being known as "Slavic Macedonia"
  • June 30: Russian President Boris Yeltsin visits Greece.

  • July 27: The Greek government expresses regret over Ukraine's decision to recognise FYROM.
  • July 31: 12 persons are killed by a fire on the island of Icaria.
