- March 8: Kostis Stephanopoulos is elected President of Greece on the third ballot.
- March 15: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November launch a rocket attack against the TV studios of MEGA during the evening news broadcast. There is property damage but no casualties.
May
- May 31: Aris Vovos with his co-driver Kostas Stefanis win the 42nd Acropolis Rally with a Lancia Delta HF Integrale. It is the first time in the last 40 years that a Greek crew wins the Acropolis Rally after Johnny Pesmatzoglou in 1955 with an Opel Kapitan

- June 7: The trial of three Greek satanists starts in Athens. The three men are accused of murdering three women.
July
- July 1: Former Crown Prince Pavlos marries American Marie-Chantal Miller in London. 10 New Democracy MPs attend the wedding causing a stir in Greek politics.
- July 20: Turkish-Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, threatens to declare union of the militarily-occupied northern part of Cyprus with Turkey, should the Republic of Cyprus join the European Union.
- July 22: Greece win the Juniors Basketball world title after defeating Australia 91-73 in Athens. Efthimis Rentzias is voted MVP of the tournament.
August
- August 21: Christina Thalassinidou wins the bronze medal in synchronized swimming at the Vienna European Championships.
September
- September 12: FYROM refuse to negotiate the matter of their name in New York unless Greece first lifts the trade embargo against them.
- September 23: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I visits Patmos as part of the celebration of the 1,900 anniversary of the writing of the Book of Revelation by the Evangelist John.
October
- October 5: The FYROM Parliament approves the removal of the Vergina Sun from their flag.
- October 12: 4,000 Greek policemen and firemen demonstrate in Athens for better wages.
- October 13: Greece lifts the embargo imposed against FYROM.
- October 23: The Municipality of Athens announces the imposition of fines for littering.
November
- November 9: Greek police disarm and arrest an Ethiopian who had hijacked an Olympic Airlines airplane, just before takeoff, and was holding a stewardess hostage.
- November 20: Andreas Papandreou is urgently admitted to the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center with serious health problems.
- November 21: A great day for Greece in the World Weightlifting championship games of China: Pyrros Dimas wins 2 gold medals and sets a world record, Kakhi Kakhiasvili wins 2 gold medals and sets 3 Greek records, Valerios Leonidis wins 3 silver medals.
