• January 10: EOKA fighter Fotis Pittas is arrested by the British.
• January 18: EOKA guerilla fighter, Markos Drakos, is ambushed and slain by the British at Solea, Cyprus.

February

• February 14: The trial of EOKA fighter, Evagoras Pallikaridis, commences.
• February 17: EOKA fighter Stylianos Lenas is wounded in a battle with British soldiers.

March

• March 2: The Battle of Machairas begins as the British come upon the cave where Grigoris Afxentiou and his men were hiding out.
• March 3: The Battle of Machairas concludes in the early hours of the morning, with the death by burning of Grigoris Afxentiou.
• March 14: Evagoras Pallikaridis is hanged in the Central Jail of Lefkosia.
• March 28:EOKA fighter Stylianos Lenas dies from his injuries.

April

• April 25: A major earthquake (7.2 on the Richter scale) strikes Rhodes and the surrounding areas including the neighbouring Turkish coasts.

• May 15: Stadiou and Akadimias become one way streets in Athens.
• May 31: Former ELAS commander Stefanos Sarafis is killed by a car driven by a US NCO. EDA calls it premeditated murder.

• June 19: Archbishop Makarios III presents to the world a list of well-documented, specific cases of torture that have taken place in Cyprus during Sir John Harding's administration.

• October 22: Sir John Harding resigns as military governor of Cyprus

November

• November 22: The elementary school diploma becomes a necessary certification for any kind of job in Greece. More evening schools are created to combat illiteracy.
