- 1821: The First National Assembly of Independence began at Epidaurus (concluded January 15, 1822)
- 1947: In a lavish wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, Princess Elizabeth married her distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten, a dashing former prince of Greece and Denmark who renounced his titles in order to marry the English princess.
- 1952: The house of writer Alexandros Papadiamantis in Skiathos became a museum.
- 1977: New Democracy won the general elections with 41.85% of the vote. PASOK received 25.3% and became the main opposition party.
- 1990: Businessman Vardis Vardinoyiannis escaped a rocket attack on his car by the Revolutionary Organisation 17 November.
- 1991: The European Parliament saluted the 2,500 anniversary of the birth of democracy in Greece.
