The 1966 season was lost by [[Panathinaikos FC|Panathinaikos]] four matches before the end when they  were unexpectedly beaten by [[Panionios FC|Panionios]] 2-1. Up to that point, they were one point ahead of rivals [[Olympiakos FC|Olympiakos]] who had not won a title since the establishment of the [[Alpha Ethniki]] in [[1959]].

Comments

The 1966 season was lost by Panathinaikos four matches before the end when they were unexpectedly beaten by Panionios 2-1. Up to that point, they were one point ahead of rivals Olympiakos who had not won a title since the establishment of the Alpha Ethniki in 1959.

Olympiakos, coached by the legendary Marton Bukovi, nearly gave away possession of 1st place the following Sunday but Nikos Gioutsos managed a last-gasp goal to secure a 2-1 home victory against lowly Panserraikos.

In their penultimate match Olympiakos travelled to Trikala to play Trikala FC who were undefeated at home. The first half ended 0-0 before a burst of goals in the 2nd half secured a 5-0 victory for the reds virtually winning them the title.
