January 1: Greece assumes the Presidency of the European Union.
January 24: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November assassinate Michalis Vranopoulos, former governor of the National Bank.
January 24: Gymnast Ioannis Melissanidis wins the PSAT award. The young champion receives accolades when he dedicates the gold medal he earned at the European Juniors to the memory of his friend, Turkish gymnast Murat Kanbas, who died in a car accident before the games. For this gesture he was awarded the Ipekci prize.

February 16: Greece imposes an embargo on FYROM.
February 21: Sportime, the daily sports newspaper, is first published.
February 27: Greek-Australians demonstrate against FYROM's use of the name "Macedonia".

March 16: PAOK defeat Stefanel 100-91 in Milan to win the Korac Cup.
March 28: EU representative Van der Brook asks Greek PM, Andreas Papandreou, to lift all the measures his government has taken against FYROM.

April 12: Greece and Albania expel each others diplomats over an attack at an army base in Argyrokastro that Albania claimed was the work of Greek agents.
April 17: Andreas Papandreou is re-elected party leader of PASOK.

June 6: Kostas Koukodimos breaks the Greek record for the long jump with a jump of 8.36m.
June 18: Ethnikos win their 35th Waterpolo title after beating Olympiakos 12-10. Ethnikos dominated the waterpolo championships for many years in the past (1953-1968 and 1972-1985)
June 21: The Greek National Football Team play their first game ever in a World Cup tournament (1994 FIFA World Cup in USA). They suffer a loss against Argentina (4-0) -- Diego Maradona scores one goal and Gabriel Batistuta a hat-trick.

July 4: Turkish Diplomat, Omer Sipahioglu, is shot and killed in Palio Faliron. The Revolutionary Organization 17 November assume responsibility.
July 5: The European Court declares the importation of products from Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus "illegal and contrary to EU legislation".
July 7: The Greek government launches a formal protest against the decision of the Albanian Parliament to commemorate the "genocide" of the Albanian minority in Northern Greece.
July 12: Two bombs go off in Rhodes, thought to be the work of foreign terrorists.
July 18: Pezoporikos and EPA merge in Larnaca to form AEK Larnaca FC.
July 19: The oldest wreckage of a classical ancient Greek ship (ca 450 BC) is found off the coast of Kyra-Panagia in the Northern Sporades.

September 7: An Albanian court hands down jail sentences to five members of the Northern Epirus "Omonia Party" for "treason and collaboration with an outside power".
September 19: Terrorist organisation ELA blow up a police bus in Perissos, Athens, killing one policeman and injuring nine others.
September 22: Former King Constantine II sues the Greek state for confiscating his personal property in Greece.

October 2: Filmnet's first broadcast of an athletic event (Iraklis vs PAOK at Kaftanzoglio Stadium)
October 5: The US Senate unanimously adopts an Act to ascertain the fate of five US citizens missing since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
October 12: Daniel Batista becomes the first black man to play for the National Football Team of Greece in a 4-0 victory over Finland.
October 16: Dimitris Avramopoulos is elected Mayor of Athens. Stelios Logothetis is elected in Piraeus and Konstantinos Kosmopoulos in Thessaloniki.
October 18 - Nikos Galis walks out on Panathinaikos and Greek Basketball

February 20: Triantafyllos Siaperas, former chess champion. In 1967 he wrote one of the first books about chess in Greece.
