February

• February 5: Female readers of "Harlequin" romance novels in 14 countries name Greeks as the sexiest men in the world.
• February 14: Glafkos Clerides is elected President of Cyprus defeating incumbent Georgios Vasiliou.
• February 19: The government of FYROM asks the Greek government for permission to open a consulate in Athens.

March

• March 16: Aris defeat Efes Pilsen 50-48 in Turin to win the European Cup-Winners' Cup. A vicious chair-fight follows the match between Greek fans and Turkish fans and players.
• March 29: George Rallis resigns from the Greek Parliament in protest over the government's handling of the FYROM problem.

April

• April 1: A defendant is shot and wounded and his lawyer is killed, during a trial for negligent homicide. The culprit - who kills himself afterwards - is the father of the man whom the defendant killed in a traffic accident.
• April 2: A great fire on Skiathos burns much of the island's forested areas.
• April 3: Panathinaikos stun Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam in the first leg of the Champions' League semi-finals.

May

• May 3: Greek-American Steven John Lalas is arrested by US authorities on charges of spying on behalf of Greece.
• May 11: Olympiakos win the first professional Basketball Championship (organized by ESAK) when Panathinaikos refuse to play the last playoff game at Peace and Friendship Stadium.
• May 15: Aris Salonica sign Ricci Thews for only one game, the Greek Cup final against Panathinaikos (with Nikos Galis in their roster). Panathinaikos will win by 96-89 in Athens.
• May 25: First european football final held at Athens' OAKA Stadium. Hamburg win the European Champions Cup as they defeat Juventus 1-0 (Magath). Top scorer Paolo Rossi (6 goals) fails to score despite the fact he is assisted by players of great caliber (Platini, Boniek, Bettega, Scirea)

June

• June 4: Bavarian Greeks petition their local government to convince the German government not to recognise FYROM as "Macedonia".
• June 4: FYROM reject Slobodan Milosevic's initiative to settle their dispute with Greece by being known as "Slavic Macedonia"
• June 30: Russian President Boris Yeltsin visits Greece.

July

• July 27: The Greek government expresses regret over Ukraine's decision to recognise FYROM.
• July 31: 12 persons are killed by a fire on the island of Icaria.

August

• August 25: Vandals destroy the Greek cemetery of Neochori in Istanbul.

September

• September 9: The government of Constantine Mitsotakis collapses after the defection of four MPs.

October

• October 10: PASOK win the general elections in Greece with 46.88% of the vote.
• October 19: Cypriots demonstrate against Queen Elizabeth's visit to Cyprus.
• October 22: PASOK MP, Apostolos Kaklamanis, is elected President of the Hellenic Parliament.

November

• November 3: Constantine Mitsotakis resigns from the leadership of the New Democracy political party. Miltiades Evert becomes the new leader.
