- February 18: Egyptian editor, Youssef Sebai, is murdered in Nicosia by members of the PLO.
- February 19: A 1-hour gun battle takes place at Larnaca International Airport between Egyptian antiterrorist forces and the Cypriot National Guard. The Egyptians had attempted to seize an aircraft with hijackers who had murdered editor Youssef Sebai the previous day.

- May 17: AEK humble Olympiakos 6-1 in the semifinal of the Greek Football Cup. Thomas Mavros scores 3 goals, Dusan Bajevic, Tasos Konstantinou and Takis Nikoloudis the other 3.
- May 18: PM Constantine Karamanlis refuses to submit the entry of Greece into the EU to a referendum.

- June 20: A powerful earthquake (6.5 on Richter scale) strikes Thessaloniki; 35 people are dead in collapse of building at Nicephorus Phocas Street.

- September 4: George Rallis is the first Greek Foreign Minister to be officially invited to the Soviet Union
- September 16: Abortions are legalised in Greece but only under certain specific circumstances.

- October 11: Greece trounce Finland 8-1 in a Euro 1980 qualifier as Thomas Mavros scores 3, Takis Nikoloudis and Giorgos Delikaris 2 each and Mike Galakos one.
December
- December 10: Mimis Papaioannou succeeds Mimis Domazos as President of PSAP.
- December 15: The International Court of Justice at The Hague declares itself to be without authority to act on the matter of the Aegean continental shelf.
- December 22: By law, the "sea flag" (nine stripes with a white cross on the upper-left quadrant) is established as the one and only flag of the Greek nation.
