- 1821: Greeks captured Tripolis during the War of Independence against Ottoman Turkey.
- 1938: The ancient theatre of Epidaurus was put to use again - after 2000 years. The first play put on was "Electra" by Sophocles.
- 1942: The Greek forces in Egypt came under German airforce bombardment. Four soldiers were killed and ten were wounded.
- 2001: The Greek Orthodox church of Saint Nicolas was damaged during the terrorist attacks striking the Twin Towers in New York City.
- Deaths: Marika Kotopouli, stage actress (1954), Solon Michaelidis, Cypriot composer (1979), Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, intellectual, politician, Prime Minister (1986)
