- March 23: General Thrasyvoulos Tsakalotos meets Markos Vafiadis and shakes hands with him in front of TV cameras. The two men had commanded opposing sides in the Greek Civil War.

- June 30: Thessaloniki is twinned with Lemesos, Cyprus.

- August 3: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November fail in their attempt to assassinate US officer Robert Judd near Elliniko Air Base.
- August 4: Babis Cholidis wins bronze in Greco-Roman wrestling in the Los Angeles Olympiad.
