Naoussa ( Greek: Νάουσα - Naousa, is a city in northern Greece. Population 22,288. The urban area sits off the road linking Veria and Skydra. The farmlands lie to the west, the forested and grovy area in the western part and the Vermio Mountains to the west. Peaches, and other fruits and crops are very famous in the low lying areas of the province. Naoussa is agriculturally famous for its jam products which are sold under the Naoussa brand name. The flavors are peach and strawberry.

History

Naoussa is first mentioned in the 15th Century. Under Ottoman rule, the city had special privileges and paid reduced taxes. Owing to this, Naoussa soon became known as a wealthy city and attracted the attention of Ali Pasha of Albania who siezed it in 1804, only to relinquish it after the Sultan told him to do so.

In 1822, Anastasios Karatasos and others proclaimed the Greek War of Independence in Naoussa. The Turks responded by sending a force of 12,000 men who besieged the city and breached its defences on April 22. An estimated 2,000 people were killed in the aftermath.

Naoussa was finally liberated in November 1912 in the First Balkan War. During the Greek Civil War, between January 11 and January 14, 1949, a battle was fought between elements of the communist Democratic Army of Greece (DSE) and local militiamen. The DSE captured and held Naousa for three days during which they forcibly conscripted 500 youths - men and women - and executed several citizens including the mayor of the city.

Other

Naoussa has schools, lyceums, gymnasia, banks, a train station (Florina - Edessa - Veria), a sports centre, a post office, and squares (plateies).
