The year begins with an outbreak of Asian flu. More than 2 million Greeks fall sick, while the death toll attributed to the virus is at least 85 people. The virus strikes Europeans very hard.

- March 8: An attempt against the life of Archbishop Makarios III fails as his seriously wounded helicopter pilot manages to land the craft despite his injuries.
