January

  • January 8: By order of the Greek Military High Command, the "phoenix arising from its ashes" is removed from officers' hats and other military insignia.
  • January 14: Dimitrios Ioannidis is arrested and jailed after he refuses to testify before the public prosecutor.

February

  • February 3: Former Viceroy Georgios Zoitakis is jailed.
  • February 13: The "Turkish Republic of North Cyprus" is declared independent by Turkish Cypriots. Only Turkey recogises the breakaway "state".
  • February 23: The National Football Team of Greece is embarassed 2-0 by Malta in La Valetta.
  • February 24: An attempted coup d'etat against the Karamanlis government is foiled. 39 officers are charged with attempted rebellion. As many of the officers involved were arrested in the middle of the night, this goes down in history as the "Pyjamas coup d'etat".
