January
- January 17: The Museum of Cycladic Art is inaugurated in Athens.
February
- February 21: Discussion over the dossier concerning Cyprus commences in the Hellenic Parliament.
March
- March 2: Vasilis Hadjipanagis scores Iraklis' 1000th goal in the Football A Division as his team defeat Olympiakos 3-1.
- March 7: the revision of the Greek constitution of 1975 is concluded, transferring many presidential powers to the Prime Minister or Parliament.
April
- April 8: Industrialist Dimitris Angelopoulos, chairman of Halivourgiki Steel Company and friend of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou is killed while leaving his home in Kolonaki. The Revolutionary Organization 17 November assume responsibility.
- April 16: OFI player, Alejandro Isis, fails his doping test for the second time in his career. He avoids punishment after the intervention of Manfred Donike, head of the Cologne toxicology department.

- May 23: The Greek Central Intelligence Agency (KYP) is renamed National Intelligence Agency (EYP).
July
- July 5: Nikos Galis scores a record 35 points as Greece beat Panama 110-81 for the World Basketball Championship in Zaragoza
September
- September 7: Larisa defeat Ethnikos Piraeus 9-0, however the Hellenic Football Federation will not recognise the result of the match as Ethnikos fielded amateurs due to a footballers' strike.
- September 13: A powerful earthquake (6.2 on the Richter scale) strikes Kalamata causing extensive damage and five fatalities.
October
- October 5: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November launches a series of bomb attacks on offices of the Greek Taxation bureau.
- October 12: New Democracy triumphs in the municipal elections as Miltiades Evert is elected Mayor of Athens, Andreas Andrianopoulos is elected Mayor of Piraeus and Sotiris Kouvelas is elected Mayor of Thessaloniki.
- October 26: 29-year old teacher, Charalambos Blionas, is killed in Larisa when he is hit with a flare during the football game between AE Larisa and PAOK.
