1865: The Hymn to Freedom is established as the National Anthem of Greece.
1936: Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas declares a state of emergency and rules by decree.
1991: Greek-owned ship, MTS Oceanos, sinks off the coast of Durban, S. Africa. Its captain and crew are heavily criticised for abandoning the ship before any passengers were rescued.

1929: Ergotelis FC play their first match: a 4-0 victory over Leon at Handax Stadium in Heraklio, Crete.
1936: Christos Mantikas breaks the Greek record for the 400m hurdles: 53.5
1961: Myron Anyfandakis breaks the Greek record for the javelin throw with 74.15m.
1972: Vasilis Papageorgopoulos breaks the Greek record for the 100m with a 10.22 performance. The record will stand for 21 years.
1984: Babis Cholidis wins bronze in Greco-Roman wrestling in the Los Angeles Olympiad.
1992: Morfo Drosidou wins bronze in Tae Kwon Do in the Barcelona Olympic Games.
2004: Demis Nikolaidis becomes President of AEK at age 31.
