• 1798: Rigas Feraios is strangled to death.
• 1825: A Greek force under Dimitrios Ypsilantis and Ioannis Makriyiannis repels the army of Ibrahim Pasha at Myloi, Argolis.
• 1835: King Otto starts to rule in fact, as well as in name, as the rule of his three Bavarian advisers comes to an end.
• 1905: PM Theodoros Deligiannis is assassinated by a gambler in revenge for the measures he enacted against gambling establishments.
• 1961: Cyprus joins the British Commonwealth.
• 1968: Tanker "World Glory" - owned by Stavros Niarchos - sinks off the coast of South Africa. Of the 34-member crew (33 Greeks and one Irishman) only ten survive.
• 2011: Greece becomes the country with the lowest credit rating in the world after S&P downgrades it by three notches, to CCC.
• 2014: Greek police seize 1.13 tons of heroin and arrest 11 individuals for drug trafficking. The seizure was the biggest of its kind in Greek history.

• 1971: Panagiotis Nacopoulos smashes Giorgos Papavassiliou's 11 year-old record in the 3000m steeplechase (8:45.8) with 8:40.8
• 1979: Philippos Syrigos begins his career as sportscaster in a basketball game. Greece face France (74-76) for the European Championship in Torino.
• 1992: Olympiakos win their first water polo championship in 21 years
• 2004: Sports journalist Manolis Mavromatis is elected to the European Parliament.
