- March 17: Christina Onassis weds Thierry Roussel.
- March 23: General Thrasyvoulos Tsakalotos meets Markos Vafiadis and shakes hands with him in front of TV cameras. The two men had commanded opposing sides in the Greek Civil War.

- April 17: Turkey exchanges ambassadors with the self-proclaimed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus"

- August 21: Greek javelin champion Anna Verouli fails to pass the anti-doping test at the Los Angeles Olympics.
- August 31: Mimis Domazos' farewell football game. Panathinaikos - Boca Juniors 2-3 at OAKA Stadium in front of 50,000 spectators. Domazos asked the coach to replace him with Spyros Livathinos at the 78th minute of the game.

- September 1: Evangelos Averoff resigns as head of the New Democracy Party. He is replaced by Constantine Mitsotakis who defeats Kostis Stephanopoulos in a special vote of party officials.

- December 24: Policeman, Christos Matis, is killed by four assailants in a branch of the National Bank in Petralona, Athens. His service revolver was found in 2002 in the possession of members of the Revolutionary Organisation 17 November.
