January
- January 13: The AEK- Olympiakos derby is interrupted five minutes before the end (1-2) when violent riots break out. Outside the Nea Philadelphia stadium a young fan is killed from a fire cracker. The match is repeated in Rhodes one month later and AEK win by 1-0 (Batista).
February
- February 7: President of the Greek Weightlifting Federation Giannis Sgouros brings Pyrros Dimas to Greece.
- February 10: Athens mayor Antonis Tritsis visits the bombed capital of Iraq, Baghdad
- February 16: Panathinaikos footballer, Danut Lupu, is arrested as leader of a criminal gang.
- February 24: Nikos Machlas makes his debut with OFI.
- February 27: Aleka Papariga is elected Secretary General of the Communist Party of Greece.
March
- March 11: The trial for the Bank of Crete scandal begins with Giorgos Koskotas as the chief defendant.
- March 13: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November detonate a remote-controlled bomb that kills US Sgt. Ronald Stewart in Glyfada.
April
- April 18: Agamemnon Koutsogiorgas dies as a result of a stroke he suffered during the George Koskotas trial.
- April 12: Greek-American Senator, Paul Tsongas, announces his candidacy for the US Presidency.
June
- June 1: George Koskotas arrives in Athens after his extradition from the US. He is promptly jailed by Greek authorities.
- June 4: FIBA celebrated the basketball jubilee by organizing an international tournament at Piraeus' Peace and Friendship Stadium. Italy ranked first and Greece second.
- June 28: The 11th Mediterranean Games open in Greece. 3,500 athletes take part in 23 events.
July
- July 16: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November unsuccessfully attempt to murder Turkish Charge d' Affaires Deniz Bulikbasi.
- July 22: Fossils of rhinoceri, antilopes and giraffes are found in Chalkidiki.
August
- August 2: The daily sports journal Ora gia Sport is first published. The Sebos family is the publisher after their withdrawal from Athlitiki Iho.
September
- September 7: Cetin Giorku, Turkish assistant press attache, is shot and killed in his car in Pangrati, Athens. The Revolutionary Organisation 17 November assume responsibility.
- September 18: Athinaikos draw 0-0 with Manchester United for the Cup Winners' Cup.
October
- October 10: Greece humble Egypt 6-1 with Dimitris Saravakos scoring 5 goals.
November
- November 2: Policeman Yiannis Varis is killed and 6 other policemen are injured by a rocket and grenade attack on a MAT bus in Exarchia, Athens. The Revolutionary Organization 17 November assumes responsibility.
- November 2: Bartholomew is elected Patriarch of Constntinople.
- November 20: The European Parliament salutes the 2,500 anniversary of the birth of democracy in Greece.
December
- December 28: First All-Star basketball game in Greece. A team of Greek players faces a team of foreigners playing in the Greek championship. A dunk by John Hutson thrashes the board.
