Events

  • 330: Constantinople becomes the capital of the Roman Empire.
  • 1933: Gen. Ioannis Metaxas and several members of the Popular Party government suggest that Eleftherios Venizelos be prosecuted as responsible for the unsuccessful coup d'etat of March 6.
  • 1934: Labour demonstrations in Kalamata turn bloody as police kill four demostrators.
  • 1958: Constantine Karamanlis is reelected PM with ERE winning 41.16% of the vote. Surprisingly, the United Democratic Left comes in second with 24.42%.
  • 1964: Two Greek officers and a Greek Cypriot policeman are machine-gunned to death in Famagusta. Another Greek officer is injured. The four men were in a vehicle that was stopped by Turkish-Cypriot irregulars.
  • 1984: The Security Council of the UN condemns the exhange of ambassadors between Turkey and the self-proclaimed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus"
