- February 8: 21 young fans are killed and 32 are injured, at the end of the Olympiakos - AEK derby, after Gate 7, which they were trying to exit, was left closed.

- May 31: PAOK coach Gyula Lorant suffers a heart attack and dies during a football match.

- October 18: Andreas Papandreou is elected PM of Greece as PASOK triumph in the general elections, winning 48.06% of the vote.
- October 21: Andreas Papandreou is sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece.

- November 23: The monotonic system (μονοτονικό σύστημα) is implemented at schools around the country in place of the polytonic system (πολυτονικό σύστημα)
