Andreas Papandreou weds Demetra Liani

January

• January 8: Larissa midfielder Kostas Kolomitrousis is seriously injured by a violent tackle from Iraklis defender Giorgos Papadopoulos during Larissa's 3-1 victory over Iraklis. Papadopoulos will face a 16-match ban.
• January 10: Public Prosecutor, Constantine Androulidakis, is attacked and wounded in the legs but dies a month later. The Revolutionary Organisation 17 November assume responsibility.
• January 21: A luxury hotel opens inside the training camp of Panathinaikos at Paiania. It was the beginning of the construction of a modern training camp (one of the best in Europe) which was concluded in 1993.
• January 26: Two masked men rob the Post Office of Chania, Crete of some 47,000,000 drachmas.

March

• March 3: The general manager of Levadiakos, Kalomiris, is caught in the attempt to bribe the referee for the match between Levadiakos and Larisa.
• March 13: Thomas Mavros of AEK scores from the penalty spot against Apollon Kalamaria to become the all-time top scorer in the history of the Alpha Ethniki.
• March 15: Menios Koutsogiorgas resigns from the PASOK government in the aftermath of the Bank of Crete scandal.

April

• April 14: It is discovered that Giorgos Koskotas hid $8 million of embezzled funds into secret Swiss bank accounts.

May

• May 3: Makis Germanakos officiates the UEFA Cup final between Napoli and Stuttgart. The Italians win thanks to a dubious penalty
• May 8: Former Minister Giorgos Petsos is injured in a bomb attack by the Revolutionary Organization 17 November in Filothei.
• May 9: Constantine Mitsotakis blames the PASOK government for the increase of terrorism in Greece.
• May 24: Manolis Glezos goes on hunger strike outside the offices of ERT, protesting its unequal treatment of the Greek political parties.

June

• June 7: Opposition leader, Constantine Mitsotakis, demands the deportation of the Turkish Consul to Komotini for direct involvement in the last Greek elections.
• June 26: In Zagreb, Greece lose the final of Eurobasket 1989 to Yugoslavia 98-77.

July

• July 2: Tzannis Tzannetakis is sworn in as Prime Minister heading a curious coalition of conservatives and communists.
• July 14: PM Andreas Papandreou weds stewardess Dimitra Liani.
• July 26: Fires destroy forrested areas of Mt Parnitha.

August

• August 2: Former Panathinaikos footballer, Lakis Sofianos, is found hanged in his prison cell.
• August 3: A Shorts 330 of the Olympic Airways (now Olympic Airlines) crashes near Samos Airport; 31 passengers die.

September

• September 1: Takis Michailidis, former sports editor in various athletic newspapers and founder member of PSAT, drowns in Loutraki.
• September 21: A European court fines Greece 650 million drachmas for passing corn from Yugoslavia as Greek and subsequently exporting it into the EU.
• September 26: MP Pavlos Bakoyiannis is slain outside his office by members of the Revolutionary Organisation 17 November.
• September 28: The Hellenic Parliament decides that former PM Andreas Papandreou and four of his cabinet members should stand trial over the Koskotas scandal.

October

• October 12: US Ambassador Michael Sotirchos meets with Communist politicians Charilaos Florakis and Leonidas Kyrkos.

November

• November 17: Riots take place in Athens on the 16th anniversary of the attack on the Athens Polytechnic Institute: One student is killed and dozens are injured as protesters sought to march on the embassy of the USA
• November 23: The political parties of PASOK, New Democracy and Synaspismos agree to support Xenophon Zolotas for Prime Minister at head of a non-party administration until fresh elections could be held.

December

• December 17: Polish forward Krzysztof Warzycha plays his first game in a Panathinaikos jersey against AEK
• December 24: The Revolutionary Organization 17 November raids Sykouri army base in Larisa, Greece and steals a quantity of anti-tank rockets and ammunition.
• December 31: Private television station ANT1 ("Ant-ena") broadcasts for the first time.
