  • February 18: Archbishop Makarios III is proclaimed President of Cyprus for a third term as there were no other candidates for the post.
  • February 25: Nikos Koemtzis kills three persons and injures another six over a song he requested at a night club. Among the dead is a nephew of former Olympiakos footballer Thanasis Soulis.

  • May 16: Greek football referee Christos Michas is punished by the European Federation for committing a series of grave errors that affected the result of the European Cup Winners Cup final Milan- Leeds (1-0) that took place in Thessaloniki.
  • May 23: The Greek military vessel "Velos" sails to Italy where its crew seeks political asylum from the military Junta that rules Greece.

  • June 1: The Junta declares the Greek Monarchy abolished.

  • July 14: Archbishop Makarios III defrocks the three Cypriot Metropolitans who had earlier called for his resignation from the Presidency of the island-republic.
  • July 29: The Military government of Greece holds a referendum on a proposed new constitution that abolishes the monarchy. 78.4% approve according to the government-released results.
