January
- January 7: Greece are defeated at home by Spain 3-2 (Koudas-Domazos) for the 1974 Germany World Cup qualifiers.
- January 29: An EgyptAir Ilyushin Il-18 aircraft (Reg No SU-AOV) crashes into the Pentadaktylos mountain range of Cyprus killing all 37 aboard (7 crew and 30 passengers).
February
- February 7: EOKA B' attack 20 police stations throughout Cyprus.
- February 18: Archbishop Makarios III is proclaimed President of Cyprus for a third term as there were no other candidates for the post.
- February 21: Law students barricade themselves inside the buildings of the Law School of the university of Athens demanding repeal of the law that imposed forceful conscription of "subversive youths".
- February 25: Nikos Koemtzis kills three persons and injures another six over a song he requested at a night club. Among the dead is a nephew of former Olympiakos footballer Thanasis Soulis.

- March 15: A large quantity of weapons and ammunition is stolen, by armed men, from a Police station in Lemesos, Cyprus. EOKA B' is blamed.

- April 22: League leaders PAOK are stunned 5-3 at home by Panachaiki. The loss dropped the Thessaloniki club into 2nd place and ended up costing them the championship.

- May 16: Greek football referee Christos Michas officiates the European Cup Winners Cup final between AC Milan - Leeds Utd. (1-0) in Thessaloniki. He will be punished later by the Greek Football Federation for his many grievous errors which affected the outcome of the match.
- May 23: The Greek military vessel "Velos" sails to Italy where its crew seeks political asylum from the military Junta that rules Greece.

- July 1: Spyros Kontosoros breaks the Greek record in the 3000m steeplechase with 8:25.6.
- July 14: Archbishop Makarios III defrocks the three Cypriot Metropolitans who had earlier called for his resignation from the Presidency of the island-republic.
- July 19: A Palestinian attacks the offices of El Al in Athens. He captures two hostages but releases them after negotiations with the Greek police.
- July 27: EOKA B' abduct Christos Vakis, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Cyprus.
- July 29: The Military government of Greece holds a referendum on a proposed new constitution that abolishes the monarchy. 78.4% approve according to the government-released results.

- October 2: Nouli Giannitsopoulou wins the bronze medal in vault at the Balkan Games in Romania. It is the first Greek medal in gymnastics.
- October 7: An unsuccessful attempt is made on the life of Cyprus President Makarios III: a bomb explodes prematurely on the road he was scheduled to travel.
- October 8: Spiros Markezinis is appointed Prime Minister of Greece by George Papadopoulos.
- October 10: Spiro Agnew, Greek-American Vice-President of the United States, resigns.
November
- November 14: Students and others occupy the Polytechnic Institute of Athens, demanding the ouster of the military junta.
- November 15: Students occupy University buildings in Patra and Thessaloniki, in support of the Polytechnic Institute uprising.
- November 16: Violent protests take place outside the Polytechnic Institute of Athens.
- November 17: Tanks tear down the gates of the Polytechnic Institute in Athens ending the student protests against the military government of Greece. 16 students die during the confrontation.
- November 25: After weeks of unrest, a coup is orchestrated by the head of the feared military police, Brigadier General Dimitrios Ioannides, which deposes the Greek Government headed by self-appointed President George Papadopoulos.
December
- December 29: Dimitris Kokolakis makes his debut with the national team against Great Britain in Athens. The “center” of Panathinaikos, Aris and Ilisiakos, will go on to score a total of 1271 points in 177 caps in his international career.
- December 30: Aris are defeated at Harilaou Stadium by Olympiakos 2-4. The team’s president, Nikos Kambanis, orders the immediate replacement of goalkeeper, Nikos Christidis by Stelios Papafloratos, considering Christidis “suspiciously” responsible for the loss.
