  • January 1: Greece officially becomes the 10th member of the European Union.

  • March 11: An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, strikes Epirus

  • November 23: The monotonic system (μονοτονικό σύστημα) is implemented at schools around the country in place of the polytonic system (πολυτονικό σύστημα)

  • December 5: Adultery is decriminalized. Article 357 of the Penal Code that called for imprisonment as a penalty for adultery is revoked.
  • December 10: Evangelos Averoff is elected Chairman of the New Democracy party.
  • December 15: PLO leader, Yasser Arafat, visits Athens on an invitation by Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou.
  • December 30: Drastic measures are taken to combat pollution in Athens. These include the alternating ban of motor vehicles from the city centre, based on the last digit of their license plate (odd-even).
