- February 8: 21 young fans are killed and 32 are injured, at the end of the Olympiakos - AEK derby, after Gate 7, which they were trying to exit, was left closed.
- February 10: Six Greek workers lose their lives in a ship that burned off Elefsina.
- February 24: An earthquake (6.6 on the Richter scale) strikes NE of Peloponnesus near Athens.

- May 21: Arsonists burn down nearly half the forested areas of Mt. Hymettus.
- May 31: PAOK coach Gyula Lorant suffers a heart attack and dies during a football match.

- September 20: Dimitris Michas breaks the Greek record in the triple jump with 17.04m. His record will stand for 17 years.

- October 18: Andreas Papandreou is elected PM of Greece as PASOK triumph in the general elections, winning 48.06% of the vote.
- October 21: Andreas Papandreou is sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece.

- November 23: The monotonic system (μονοτονικό σύστημα) is implemented at schools around the country in place of the polytonic system (πολυτονικό σύστημα)

- December 5: Adultery is decriminalized. Article 357 of the Penal Code that called for imprisonment as a penalty for adultery is revoked.
- December 10: Evangelos Averoff is elected Chairman of the New Democracy party.
- December 15: PLO leader, Yasser Arafat, visits Athens on an invitation by Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou.
- December 30: Drastic measures are taken to combat pollution in Athens. These include the alternating ban of motor vehicles from the city centre, based on the last digit of their license plate (odd-even).
