- February 16: Andreas Papandreou inaugurates the Stadium of Peace and Friendship in Neo Phaliro, Piraeus.
- February 21: Publisher Nikos Momferatos of the daily paper Apogevmatini and his driver are killed in Kolonaki. The Revolutionary Organisation 17 November assume responsibility.
March
- March 3: The 16th European Indoor Athletics Championships conclude in Peace & Friendship Stadium. Just before the start, SEGAS has withdrawn 5 of its champions because of suspicions of doping.
- March 10: Constantine Karamanlis resigns as President of Greece. Parliament President, Ioannis Alevras, assumes the post in a caretaker capacity.
- March 29: Christos Sartzetakis is elected President of Greece by the Hellenic Parliament.

- April 6: The Greek Parliament accepts the proposal of the PASOK government to amend the constitution.

- May 15: Terrorist Christos Tsoutsouvis and three police officers die in a shooting exhange following a stolen motorcycle chase.

- June 2: Andreas Papandreou is re-elected PM of Greece.
- June 14: A TWA Boeing 727 is hijacked by Shiite extremists as it leaves Ellinikon International Airport. Among the hostages is singer Demis Roussos.
September
- September 7: Kostis Stephanopoulos forms the Democratic Renewal Party (DI.ANA.). Ten New Democracy MPs follow him.
November
- November 17: 15-year old Michalis Kaltezas is shot dead by Police officer Athanasios Melistas during rioting marking the 12th anniversary of the attack on the Athens Polytechnic Institute.
- November 23: An EgyptAir plane is hijacked after its departure from Ellinikon International Airport.
- November 24: Twelve Greeks are among 60 persons killed, after a hijacked EgyptAir plane is stormed in Malta by Egyptian troops.
- November 26: Officer Nikos Georgakopoulos is killed when a bomb explodes near a MAT bus by the Hilton Hotel in downtown Athens. The Revolutionary Organization 17 November assume responsibility.
