• January 16: Christofori Bakatselou, Maria Galani and Katerina Pantaina become the first female judges on the Disciplinary Committee of EPAE (Greek Football Clubs Association)
• January 16: Greece finish 5th at Women's Waterpolo World Championship in Perth, Australia after beating Canada 10-9 in overtime
• January 24: Krzysztof Warzycha scores his 182nd League goal against Apollon Athens earning first place on Panathinaikos' all-time scoring list. Antonis Antoniadis had previously held the record with 181.
• January 25: Giorgos Vasilakopoulos replaces Zacharias Alexandrou as President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK). Alexandrou had been President from 1977.

February

• February 1: Aris Thessaloniki (coached by Christos Magotsios) put aside the financial problems to win the Greek Cup by overcoming AEK (coached by Yiannis Ioannidis) 71-68 in the final. Panagiotis Liadelis is voted MVP
• February 9: Young PAOK midfielder Panagiotis Katsouris is killed in a car accident.
• February 15: Glafkos Clerides is re-elected President of Cyprus.

March

• March 14: PM Costas Simitis announces the devaluation of the drachma by 14%.

April

• April 7: Greek-British pop star, George Michael, is arrested in the US on charges of performing "lewd acts".
• April 8: Anghel Iordanescu becomes head coach of the National Football Team of Greece.
• April 28: The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece elects Metropolitan Christodoulos as Archbishop of Athens and all Greece.

May

• May 3: Vitesse striker Nikos Machlas scores his 34th goal in a match against Feyenoord (2-1) becoming Europe's top scorer
• May 16: Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas is the first Greek to play in an English FA Cup final at Wembley (Newcastle Utd. - Arsenal 2-0)
• May 17: Stelios Manolas plays his last game as AEK defeat SKODA Xanthi (2-0).
• May 23: Olympiakos lose to Ferencvaros in the Waterpolo European Cup double final.
• May 24: Panathinaikos win their first Greek championship in 14 years by defeating PAOK 68-58 in the playoffs. After this game PAOK star Predrag Stojakovic moves to the Sacramento Kings becoming the first Greek to play in NBA.
• May 30: Katerina Thanou breaks the womens' 100m Greek record with a time of 10.99.
• May 31: Greece U21 rank 2nd after losing to Spain 1-0 in the final of European Football Championship.

July

• July 5: Greek-American Pete Sampras wins his 5th successive Wimbledon title, equalling the record set by Bjorn Borg.
• July 28: The European Court on Human Rights awards Cypriot refugee, Titina Loizidou, £640,000 from the Turkish government, for denial of use of her property in Kyrenia.
• July 30: Fanis Christodoulou announces his retirement from professional basketball.

August

• August 10: 31 year-old trainer Giorgos Loukanidis, son of the legendary Panathinaikos and Doxa Drama striker Takis Loukanidis, dies in a car accident.
• August 27: The Athens Stock Market ("Sofokleous Street") closes with a 7.7% loss.

September

• September 5: Cyprus defeat Spain 3-2 in a Euro 2000 qualifier.
• September 14: ESAKE approve the plan of Aris BC to retire Nikos Galis' number 6 jersey. Aris are allowed the use of number 16 for the missing number 6.

October

• October 18: Vasilis Papageorgopoulos is elected mayor of Thessaloniki

December

• December 29: The governments of Greece and Cyprus decide to proceed with the installation of Russian made antiballistic missiles S-300 in Crete, ignoring Turkey's strong objections and reactions.
